China's retail meat prices rise in August
The retail prices of beef, pork and chicken in China during August were higher compared to the previous month.
However, compared with the same period last year, prices were mixed with stronger beef values but weaker pork and chicken prices.
Pork prices rose for the second consecutive month in August, an increase of 10 percent on July to RMB17.97/kg (US$2.63/kg), raising the government's concerns on its possible inflationary effect. Despite this, pork prices remain 23 percent below the level of August 2008 and is not expected to bounce back to last year's high.
Meanwhile, the retail boneless beef prices in August were steady to slightly higher compared with July, averaging RMB32.93/kg. Compared with the same period last year, beef prices were two percent higher.
