Strategie Grains ups 08-09 EU grain output to 305 million tonnes

The EU grain crop forecast has been revised upwards to 305 million tonnes, a rise of 5.3 million tonnes from August's estimate, and up 19 percent on the year, a Strategie Grains report said Thursday (September 18, 2008).

This is the fifth consecutive rise in the analytical report's monthly E.U. crop size forecast.

The increased production is mainly attributed to soft wheat, which was revised to 137.6 million tonnes, up 3.7 million tonnes on the month and up 23 percent from 2007-08.

Barley and corn production were also increased slightly from last month's forecasts, to 64.3 million tonnes and 60.1 million tonnes.

Corn has seen a sharp rise in feed use, with barley and wheat looking less competitive, the report said.
