UK milk production continues to decline in August
Total UK milk production showed a further decline last month, according to provisional Rural Payments Agency figures.
August production totalled 1,047.9 million litres, one-percent below August 2008.
On a cumulative basis, production for the first five months of the 2009-10 milk year stood at 5623.9 million litres, 41 million litres less than last year and the lowest since 1971-72.
GB deliveries for August totalled 907 million litres, 0.4-percent higher than August 2008, according to DairyCo.
Total GB deliveries for the 2009-10 milk year were 22 million litres, 0.5-percent higher than last year; milk deliveries in Northern Ireland were 62 million litres, seven-percent lower over the same period.
DairyCo said this could be caused by the significantly lower milk price in NI compared with the GB average.
