Brunei Experiences Egg Supply Shortage

Brunei has been experiencing an egg supply shortage for the last two weeks. Consumers have been urged to avoid panic-buying of eggs.

The current shortage has also led to some vendors taking advantage by increasing the prices.

Relevant agencies have urged the public not to hoard up eggs. The current demand suddenly surged while the supply remains the same.

The buying has been further strained by the upcoming festive season.

"However, the relevant agency is monitoring the situation and taking appropriate action. If there is a shortage, eggs will be obtained from the neighbouring country," an official said.

"When the public is rushing to buy eggs, vendors will increase the price as eggs are not considered controlled items. It is a demand and supply matter," the source pointed out.

The production of eggs in the country has reached 108 million per year with an average of eight to nine million per month.

The annual market value is around $17.22 million.

There has been an increase of about 3 per cent in egg production annually and the overall production is believed to be self-sufficient.
