China's fresh egg production recovered gradually while its fresh egg exports rose during the first half of 2004. Prices of eggs, layer day-old-chicks and layer complete feed in the country also increased generally in the second quarter of 2004. However, its exports of processed eggs, including preserved and salted eggs, declined during the first half of this year.       

 

In January-June 2004, a total of 771 million units of egg products worth US$33.7854 million were exported from China, a year-on-year increase of 1.72% and 54.14%, respectively.  On the other hand, the country's imports of egg products, mainly processed eggs, were comparatively negligible.

 

China exported a total of 644 million fresh eggs in January-June 2004, making up 83.53% of China's overall egg product exports for the period, an increase of 4.64% compared with the same period last year. In terms of export value, China's fresh egg exports in the same period totaled US$23.671 million, a remarkable rise of 91.9% compared with the first half of 2003.

 

During the second quarter of 2004, China's average retail price of chicken egg was RMB6.14/kg, a rise of 22.49% compared with the same period last year. Compared with the first quarter of 2004, the increase was 1.38%.  The national average price of chicken eggs for the month of June was RMB 6.42 /kg, the highest since 2002.     

 

China's national average price of layer day-old-chicks for second quarter 2004 was RMB 1.93/chick, up by 3.94% compared with the same period last year, and a rise of 4.32% compared with the first quarter of 2004.

 

In second quarter 2004, China's national average price for layer complete feed was RMB 1.95 /kg for, up by 17.98% compared with the same period last year and an increase of 5.23% compared with the first quarter of 2004.
