Brazil's pork export value shows increase
Brazilian pork exports in August totalled US$115.916 million, an on-year increase of 32.4%, according to the Brazilian Pork Packaging and Export Association (Abipecs).
The increase was supported by a 29% rise in average pork prices, to US$2,431 per tonne.
"The forex appreciation continues to reduce the competitiveness of the domestic pork on external markets, but prices have fortunately risen a lot, offering an important compensation," Abiecs president Pedro de Camargo Neto said in a statement.
Shipments in volume, meanwhile, were up 2.6% on the year in August, to 47,689 tonnes.
In January through August, exports increased 14.8% in revenue, to US$885.44 million, but fell 7.2% in volume, to 389,052 tonnes.
The main buyers of Brazilian pork in August were Russia, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Argentina, and Angola. Sales to Russia rose 84% in revenue last month, to US$61.2 million, and 38% in volume, to 23,132 tonnes. In the first eight months of 2010, Russia bought 165,841 tonnes (+46%) of Brazilian pork, for US$453 million (+51%).
