EU permits pork product imports from Serbia

Serbia has been permitted to export pork products to the EU market, according to the Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management minister Ssa Dragin on Wednesday (Sep 9).

Dragin said this would result in a minor fluctuation in the prices of pork products, an increase in the cattle fund, and an export surplus in agriculture.

He said Serbia last year realised a surplus in the export trade of agricultural products worth US$600 million and announced that the surplus will this year be significantly higher and reach more than US$800 million.

He said the permit for exports of pork products to the EU would benefit the animal husbandry sector since Serbia was granted permission to export beef to the market of Europe.

There is an essential difference between the exports of these two types of meat, the minister specified, because there are no quota for exports of pork.

It is therefore possible to export as much as can be sold on the European market from abattoirs that have received certificates for exports to the EU, he said.
