China bans hog imports from Armenia on swine fever outbreak

China banned hog imports from Armenia due to an outbreak of African swine fever there, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on its website Friday (Sep 7).

China has banned direct or indirect imports of swine, wild swine and their products from Armenia after six cases of African swine fever were detected in the country recently.

African swine fever, which is fatal to hogs, had been nearly confined to sub-Saharan Africa since 1990.

China's pork prices surged earlier this year due to a pork shortage, following an outbreak of blue ear disease.
