Finland's meat consumption up by 2%

 


According to Suomen Gallup Elintarviketieto's latest market survey, meat consumption in Finland has amounted to 220.3 million kg in January-July 2010, 2% more against the same period in 2009.


The share of imported meat in the total consumption has increased significantly. Anne Kallinen, managing director of Suomen Gallup Elintarviketieto, said the trend began in spring 2010 during the strike in Finland's food industry.


The total meat volume imported into Finland was around 40 million kg in January-July 2010. Imported pork accounted for 17% of the total consumption of pork in the seven-month period. The share of imports was just under 20% in beef and 12% in chicken.


Finland's total volume exports were 28.8 million kg in the first seven months of 2010, which was around 24% less than in the same period of 2009.


Meat production in Finland totalled 214 million kg in January-July 2010, which was around 10 million kg less than in the first seven months of 2009. The production of pork decreased by 6%, beef by 4%, and poultry meat by 2% over a year.
