Philippine city promotes organic tilapia
A "chemical-free tilapia project" that would produce the first organic tilapia fingerlings in the country's province is supported by the Iloilo provincial government.
The 1,000-square metre organic tilapia farm, supervised by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), aims to promote healthy lifestyle by using the aquaculture technology in inland farming.
BFAR-Iloilo officer-in-charge Carol Cajilig said around 2, 500 fingerlings are now being cultured and would be harvested 5-6 months from now.
Cajilig said they feed duckweeds and rice bran to fingerlings as part of their organic farming method.
Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said organic tilapia farming is a good project and hoped that it will serve as a model project for farmers.
