USDA to make extra purchase of chicken dark meat
The USDA will purchase as much as US$30 million of chicken dark meat items for federal food nutrition assistance programmes, announced Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
"The purchase will assist food banks and other federal food nutrition assistance programmes offer recipients a wide variety of healthy products," Vilsack said in a statement.
The USDA's Agricultural Marketing Services buys food each year for programmes including the National School Lunch Programme, the School Breakfast Programme, the Summer Food Service Programme, the Food Distribution Programme on Indian Reservations, the Commodity Supplemental Food Programme and the Emergency Food Assistance Programme.
In a statement, the USDA said that the total purchase could fall short of US$30 million depending on market conditions.
