Vietnam spends US$584 million on wheat imports

In January-August of this year, Vietnam spent US$584 million on importing nearly two million tonnes of wheat.

The import volume rose 22.2% from the same period last year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said, attributing the higher demand of wheat in local animal feed production to the import hike.

In August, the country imported 205,000 tonnes of wheat at value US$66 million, the ministry said without giving comparative figures.

The Southeast Asian country imported 2.394 million tonnes of wheat worth US$802 million worth in 2011, said the government's General Statistics Office.
