Pakistan finds substandard meat during Ramadan

The sales of unhygienic water-filled meat were rising in Pakistan's Rawalpindi and Islamabad during the holy month Ramadan.

A livestock official said there was no inspection on slaughterhouses during Ramadan.

The butchers injected water into the animal's jugular vein to increase meat weight and enhance the appearance, but the practice makes the meat unfit for human consumption, the official said.

A resident of Saddar Area said there were only two quality control inspectors in Rawalpindi compared with 3,000 meat shops in the city.

All wrongdoings of butchers were unchecked due to the absence of a proper slaughterhouse in Rawalpindi, he added.
