Big names in soy industry working to create healthy soy varieties
The biggest names in the soy industry are working to produce healthier soy in response to the growing demand for healthier food.
With an eye on the increasingly health-conscious consumer population, the top names in the industry such as CHS, Monsanto and Pioneer are working to create soy varieties low in transfats.
Transfat is an unnatural fat that is not broken down in the human body and several states have imposed transfats limits on food producers.
While consumers worry about health impacts, farmers worry about yields.
A spokesman from Monsanto said the company hopes breeding experiments would yield a variety that would meet the needs of both sectors next year.
