A Romanian-Chinese company based in Brasov, central Romania, will start exporting live cattle to China within the next 60 days.
Liu Dong, chairman of Cattle Ferma de Bovine SRL, a Romanian-Chinese joint-venture, said the initial shipment would be 5,000 head of cattle. The annual export goal, however, is 20,000 head of Holstein and Baltata breed of cattle, he said.
Mr. Liu Dong made the announcement Monday at a meeting between Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta and and a group of Chinese businessmen.
The two governments signed in November last year for the export of live cattle and pork from Romania to China. These exports have yet to materialise, however.
Mr. Liu Dong said documentation procedures between the two countries had caused the delay of the first shipment.
Cattle Ferma de Bovine SRL was set up two years ago to raise cattle for export on a 400-hectare land in the Brasov area of Romania.
In a meeting with the visiting Chinese businessmen, Romania's Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin said export of pork to China would also begin soon.
