Indonesia soymeal imports likely up 10 percent on-year

Indonesian soymeal imports are likely to rise 10 percent on-year to 2.4 million  tonnes in 2007, Franciscus Affandy, vice-chairman of Charoen Pokphand Indonesia, a major feed milling company, told Dow Jones Newswires Wednesday (Sep 5).

"Indonesia imports all its soybeans, so imports are going up in exactly the same proportion as poultry demand, which is likely to be 10 percent higher on-year," said Affandy.

He added that domestic poultry production is increasing largely because of faster economic growth, which is putting more money in the hands of people.

Affandy said corn imports would likely fall to 500,000 tonnes from 1 million tonnes in 2006, due to higher-than-expected Indonesian corn output this year.

The industry expects corn output this year to total 8.5 million tonnes compared with 7.5 million tonnes last year, according to Affandy.
