Price summary

Shrimp trading price increased from last week to THB230/kg (US$7.30/kg) this week for a kilogramme of 50 shrimp.

On average, shrimp wholesale trading volume increased by almost 100 containers per day after improvement is seen in the Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) situation after action is taken by farmers and the Department of Fishery.

Market analysis

Kasikorn Research Center foresee that Thai shrimp export would recover in 2014, as long as the United States does not impose Countervailing Duty ( CVD) and Anti-Dumping Duty (AD) on Thailand in its final consideration.

Overall, Thai shrimp export will decline by more than 30% from last year, after the Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) situation became more serious this year.

In addition, the case of human trafficking is still one of main problems, although the Thai government abides by Good Labour Practice (GLP). Regardless, Thailand is still listed in Tier 2 of the Watch List of the United States Trafficking in Person report.

When the EMS situation and labour problems improve and Bangkok is removed from Tier 2 Watch List in the near term, together with economic recovery in the main markets of Thai shrimp exports: the United States, Japan and the European Union, the Thai shrimp export industry would improve in the beginning of 2014.

Lack of raw shrimp since the beginning of this year made Thailand lose its position as top shrimp exporter to the United States, both in export volume and value. In the first half of 2013, Thai shrimp export to US slid to 4th in export volume and 5th in export value, after Vietnam in June 2013.

Although Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) holds 80% of local market share in the Thai shrimp industry, it was affected both by a lack in raw shrimp supply to the processing plants and loss in sales of aquatic feed. For the first six months of the year, CPF's total sales was THB180,000 million or US$5,715 million, with profit THB2,600 million or US$82.5 million. CPF has recently seen improvement in the EMS disease outbreak situation.
