India's Orissa region kicks off workshop on FRP hatchery

India's Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) has kicked-off a workshop in the Western Orissa regions to help the population improve their socio economic conditions through carp-farming.

Orissa is a state on India's east coast.

Project directors of fish farm companies and more than a hundred other associates are expected to attend the workshop.

The chief feature of the project is centred on the use of the fibre-glass reinforced plastic (FRP) hatchery.

The FRP hatchery has vastly benefited the aquaculture sector. The hatchery can be transported, installed and operated in remote places to ensure easy and timely availability of seeds providing a great convenience to farmers.

CIFA had installed this hatchery in 16 farms during the past year.

Director of Orissa Watershed Development Mission (OWDM) G B Reddy said the aquaculture sector can play a crucial role in eliminating poverty.

The portable carp hatchery developed by CIFA was effective in providing quality seed to the farmers, he added.
