China's COFCO invests in pig production project

China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corp (COFCO) has begun construction of its US$588 million live hog breeding and processing base in Tianjin.

The complex, which is situated in Baodi District, is expected to output two million live hogs and 150,000 tonnes of pork annually after its completion in five years. The move is to meet the increasing demand for pork in Beijing and Tianjin. Industry analysts expected that Tianjin's annual pork demand would reach 275,000 tonnes in 2010.

Meanwhile, COFCO expects to complete the first phase of the project before the end of this year when a RMB300 million (US$43.9 million) ecological pig farming community designed to output 220,000 live hogs yearly will be operational.
