South Africa to boost egg consumption; faces challenges

The South African industry aimed to double its national egg consumption but the egg industry still faces certain challenges, said the International Egg Commission (IEC).

South Africa's egg industry is being affected by international factors, including the rising cost of corn, and the increased production of bio-ethanol in the US.

Increased production costs and preventing bird flu are also becoming major challenges for South African egg producers.

Additionally, 2009 will also see changes to import and export tariffs in South Africa.
