EU milk output rises despite lower prices; trends vary

While milk output has fallen significantly in Ireland, Britain and France, total EU milk production has increased this year despite the collapse in prices.

Milk production trends across Europe vary strongly.

Germany, the leading producer, increased output by eight percent from April to the end of June.

Italian milk output has increased by four percent during the first three months of 2009-10.

Dutch and Polish output has increased by almost four percent for the same period.

The Italian and German agricultural ministries are reported to propose herd retirement schemes to reduce output.

Milk production in France and the UK fell by three percent and one percent respectively during the second quarter of the year.
