EC approves Monsanto's GM rapeseed for animal feed

The European Commission (EC) has recently approved Monsanto's GM rapeseed for sale in the EU as animal feed.

While the license was granted for ten years, the EC prohibited Monsanto from selling the herbicide-resistant rapeseed known as GT73 for cultivation or for human food.

GT73 was earlier considered by the European Food Safety Authority to be as safe as conventional oilseed.

GT73 is currently grown in the US, Australia and Canada, and allowed for sale in those countries, as well as Japan, the Philippines and South Korea.
