Asian feed industry learns more about enzymes' role in AGP-free nutrition from Danisco

Technical and senior managers representing the Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese feed industries recently visited Spain and Denmark with Danisco Animal Nutrition to learn more about feed enzymes, how they helped European producers or feed manufacturers implement AGP-free nutrition strategies, and their beneficial impact on food safety and the environment.

Representing nine feed manufacturers and integrators throughout Asia, the participants started their week-long tour in Madrid, Spain, with a visit to Nutreco, a leading European player in premix, speciality and compound feed, where they visited the Research & Development Centre and one of its 15 feed mills in Spain. There they heard about the benefits of feed enzymes from a feed manufacturer's perspective before being given an overview of poultry and pig production in the country by Dr Rafael Duran, Technical Manager for Danisco Animal Nutrition. Delegates then went on to visit one of Spain's leading poultry production units to see for themselves the practical benefits of feed enzymes.

Transferring to Copenhagen, Denmark, the group was taken on a guided tour of Danisco's headquarters and learnt about Danisco's competencies in innovation, which included combining bioscience with ingredient knowledge to develop novel solutions for the feed industry. Niels Kjeldsen, representing Danish Slaughterhouses and the National Community for Pig Production, shared with the group the Danish experience of AGP-free pig production.

Day four of the tour included a presentation by Dr Gary Partridge, the director for technical services, Danisco Animal Nutrition, on the beneficial role of feed enzymes in AGP-free nutrition, food safety and the environment. Delegates also learned more on the subject of 'Competition in the global pork market' during a briefing by John Strak of Euro-PA and Associates, following which they were taken on a tour of a feed factory owned by DLG, Denmark's largest feed manufacturer.

During a visit to Danisco's laboratories, delegates were given an insight into enzyme development and how the latest Near Infra-Red (NIR) technology could provide a rapid, accurate and low cost means of assessing quality of feed raw materials and potential response to treatment with feed enzymes. Later, during a visit to one of Danisco's enzyme factories, they had the opportunity to see feed enzymes being produced on an industrial scale.

Charles Han, chairman of the Great Wall Group in Taiwan and one of Danisco's guests, commented: "The tour provided us all a deeper understanding of Danisco Animal Nutrition's expertise in the field of feed enzyme technology, together with an invaluable practical insight into their usage and impact in Europe."
