*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine.

Market analysis

A local producer who halted operation lately resumed production during the period in review. However, methionine producers and distributors held price quotes unchanged and negotiated prices of a case-by-case basis.

Meanwhile, demand for methionine remained flat as poultry feed millers withheld purchases prudently.

During July, China imported 17,132 tonnes of methionine, up 8% compared with the previous month, and higher by a prominent 18% compared with a year ago.

In Europe, spot prices of methionine stayed firm in the range of EUR3.51-3.63/kg while large volume orders were lower at EUR3.54-3.59/kg.

Market forecast

Egg prices are expected to rise during early September as the making of moon cakes increase in the coming weeks with Mid-Autumn Festival approaching. This will help to perk up the demand for methionine as feed sales improve. However, with supplies of methionine abundant, prices are less likely to move higher.
