Brazil to lobby Uruguay to export chickens

The Brazilian Chicken Producers and Exporters Association, or Abef, confirmed Friday (Aug 28) that Brazil will lobby the Uruguayan government to establish an animal health agreement to enable chicken exports.

"Not opening the Uruguayan market to Brazilian chicken imports for animal health reasons is totally unjustifiable," Fransico Turra, Abef's president said.

Abef is working with the Brazilian embassy to establish meetings in September between Uruguayan importers and government representatives to hammer out an agreement on animal health issues, local newspaper Estado de S. Paulo reported.

Turra didn't give an expected timeframe for the Uruguayan market to open exports or likely targets.

Brazil is the world's No.1 chicken exporter.
