Feed price increases could cripple Irish pig sector

The sharp price hike in feed may cripple the Irish pig sector, producers warned.

Irish pig farmers say they are currently losing EUR 2-3 per pig and say the situation would get worse if feed prices rise further, which is likely.

Feed prices could rise by EUR 20-30 per tonne from September 1, IFA pig committee vice-chairman, Tim Cullinan claimed, adding to production costs.

Production costs are likely to be close to EUR 1.50/kg deadweight, he said.

There would have to be a substantial increase in food prices if farmers are to remain in production.

Cullinan insisted that products using Irish pigmeat should carry the Bord Bia quality assurance scheme logo and that retailers should not be allowed to deceive customers on the origin of products.

He also urged retail and catering sectors to raise prices to reflect the higher cost of production.
