Russia to lift AH1N1-related pork bans

Russia plans to remove pork import restrictions imposed due to the AH1N1, according to the deputy head of Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) Nikolai Vlasov.

Russia was able to stop the epidemic's advance, allowing experts to have more time to develop a vaccine, Vlasov said.

Meanwhile, Russia could face another dangerous infection - African swine fever, he said.

Because of the disease the population of wild boars in the Stavropol Area decreased from 3,500 to 150 species, while North Ossetia lost all its pigs, he added.

The disease threatens not only wild boars but also domestic pigs.
