US July red meat production up 4 percent from previous year

 

 

US red meat production totaled 3.94 billion pounds in July, up 4 percent on-year, reports National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), in the March 2007 Livestock slaughter report.

 

US red meat production in May reached a record high of 4.08 billion pounds.

 

July's pork production totaled 1.7 billion pounds, up 7 percent from the previous year.  Hog slaughter totaled 8.40 million head, up 7 percent from July 2006, with average live weight up 1 pound from the previous year, at 264 pounds.

 

January to July 2007 commercial red meat production was 27.5 billion pounds, up 2 percent from 2006.

 

Beef production was up 1 percent from last year, veal was up 4 percent, pork was up 2 percent from last year, and lamb and mutton production was down 3 percent.
