Canadian pork exports declining due to drop in production

 

 

Canadian pork exports fell 6.2 percent in the first six months of 2007 as domestic production declined.

 

Canada exported 373,453 tonnes of pork during the period, according to Global Trade Information Services (GTIS).

 

The US, the largest importer, accounted for 40 percent of shipments of 150,188 tonnes.

 

Japan, the second-largest importer of Canadian pork, accounted for almost a quarter (27.6 percent), or 103,168 tonnes. This was down 3.6 percent from the year before.

 

Exports to other major customers such as Russia, China and Mexico fell as well.
