Vietnam's Mekong Delta region targets to catch 1.8 million tonnes of freshwater fish from 195,000 hectares under aquaculture in 2010, up 426,000 tonnes from two years earlier.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the total volume includes 1.2 million tonnes of tra fish, which will be bred on 8,600 hectares in nine provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Long An, Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, and Can tho City.

Meanwhile, snake-head fish and anabas will be bred on around 90,000 hectares, mostly in Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Vinh Long, Dong Thap and Long An.

Four provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh will also dedicate 10,500 hectares of water surface to breeding green-leg shrimp, the association added.

The localities have caught 910,000 tonnes of fresh-water fish so far this year, meeting 50% of the year's plan, and posting on-year rise of 29%.
