Ukrainian poultry products adhere to EU standards

Ukraine-made production of poultry meat and eggs has confirmed its compliance with European standards, according to a European Commission (EC) report cited by the State Veterinary Medicine Committee.

In particular, the EU inspectors acknowledged that Ukraine had introduced an efficient system of production control at factories and farms. At the same time, the report notes the importance of implementing additional measures to ensure the maintenance of animals at slaughter points.

In July 2010, the Ukrainian side submitted to the EC the action plan to implement the recommendations of the inspectors to remedy the deficiencies. In addition, from July 1 Russia lifted restrictions on imports from Ukraine of all types of animal products, but only from those companies that had been inspected by Russian experts.

These solutions create positive conditions for exports of domestic poultry farm products. The domestic market of Ukraine is practically saturated, and the potential for development of the industry exists only in the case of increasing foreign supplies.

Based on materials from the State Statistics Committee of 2009, the consumption of poultry meat per capita in this country amounted to 23 kg, which corresponds to a similar indicator of European countries. Last year 15.6 billion eggs were produced, of which no more than 13 billion was used in the domestic market.
