US cattle on feed down two percent on August 1
Cattle and calves on feed for US slaughter market for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totalled 9.6 million head on August 1, 2009, down two percent on-year.
Placements in feedlots during July totalled 1.86 million, up 13 percent on-year. Net placements were 1.82 million head.
During July, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 455,000, 600-699 pounds were 365,000, 700-799 pounds were 458,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 585,000.
Marketings of fed cattle during July totalled 1.93 million, down five percent on-year. Other disappearance also fell four percent on-year to total 43,000 during July.
All cattle and calves in the U S and Canada combined totalled 116.6 million head on July 1, 2009, down two percent from a year ago. All cows and heifers that have calved dropped two percent on-year to 47 million head.
All cattle and calves in Canada as of July 1, 2009, totalled 14.8 million head, down two percent from 15.2 million on July 1, 2008. All cows and heifers that have calved declined five percent on-year to 5.57 million.
