VIV Turkey spreads its wings
An eFeedLink exclusive report
Poultry and cattle get together at the biennial VIV Turkey, a three-day exhibition held concurrently this year with Animalia Istanbul 2005 and the 14th World Veterinary Poultry Congress.
This year, eFeedLink makes its debut appearance at VIV Turkey, with a booth at F10.
VIV Turkey 2005, a poultry trade exhibition for the Turkish and Middle Eastern regions, and Animalia Istanbul are at the CNR Expo grounds in Istanbul, just minutes away from the city's international airport. A shuttle bus links the exhibition grounds to the Polat Renaissance Hotel, where the World Veterinary Poultry Congress is being held.
Turkey's poultry sector, ranked the 18th largest worldwide, is bouncing back from a national economic crisis which saw the Turkish lira plummet to a fraction of its value. International exhibitions like VIV Turkey, which bring together domestic and international industry players, help to showcase the best of the country's poultry and meat sector to a worldwide audience.
Opening the exhibition, Prof Ahmet Ergϋn, president of the Turkish Veterinary Poultry Association, said, "We should take advantage of such opportunities to show to the world the size and trustworthiness of the Turkish poultry sector."
Prof Ergϋn also added that poultry and egg consumption in Turkey, at a per capita rate of 13kg and 135 eggs respectively, is just half of that in Europe and has every potential for further increase.
"Meat and egg consumption is one indicator of development. The Turkish meat and livestock industry thus plays an important role in the country's overall growth," he said.
Growth will also come through widening the export base of the poultry sector. International accreditations such as HACCP and GMP will help Turkey's poultry sector adapt to standards of export markets while also improving domestic technological and production standards.
In line with food safety requirements, all periodical remnant analyses are also performed on chicken meat.
Local businesses are optimism of the opportunities for growth. Bora Demerci, who works at the international marketing division of Tasvan, Turkey's largest poultry equipment builder, says that VIV Turkey is the most important domestic event for poultry equipment and all poultry-related products.
"The participation of international companies at VIV Turkey is growing year by year," he says. "This is definitely a very good platform for us, and the many Turkish and regional companies who wish to spread their wings overseas."
VIV Turkey 2005, organised by VNU Exhibitions in Europe and HKF Trade Fairs of Turkey, will be on till Aug 27.
