Saudi poultry companies call for curbs on imports

Saudi poultry producers have asked the government to halt imports after they incurred huge losses due to the kingdom's dependence on overseas purchases, Al Yaum daily reports Sunday (August 23).

As many as 370 local producers have submitted petitions to the government saying their losses rose to 600 million Saudi riyals (US$80 million) due to the flood of imported poultry, mainly from Brazil, the paper says.

Dumping of Brazilian products has resulted in driving 29 chicken producers out of the market after losing ground in unfair competition, the producers said, according to the paper.
