Market analysis

Shrimp prices were quite stable in July after the significant drop in June, even though supply is still behind demand. Particularly, price of giant tiger prawn of size 20 pcs per kilogram rose VND2,000 (US$0.089) compared to the end of last month; size 30 pcs per kilogram stayed at VND210,000 (US$9.43); size 40 pcs per kilogram rose slightly by VND1,000 (US$0.045). For whiteleg shrimp, size 70 pcs per kilogram was down VND3,000 (US$0.13) and size 100 pcs per kilogram dropped VND2,000 (US$0.089).

Adverse weather conditions, leading to high heat and salinity levels, continued to impact shrimp production greatly. The damaged area is said to be quite large. Authorities are strengthening inspection and surveying to limit the damage. Output of giant tiger prawn and whiteleg shrimp in the Mekong river delta in the first six months of 2016 were lower than the same period last year, as follows: farming area of giant tiger prawn was estimated at 526,281 hectares, up 2%, and the output is estimated at 72,257 tonnes (-12%); whiteleg shrimp: 24,017 hectares (-5%) and 40,811 tonnes (-14%).

Market forecast

The weather is forecast to take a turn, and in recent days the first rains have appeared in some areas. Farmers are advised to take measures in disease prevention in the transition period. Shrimp prices in Ca Mau are not expected to decrease significantly in the near future.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, shrimp supply will be in shortage in the next half year due to the unfavourable weather. However, value of export shrimp is expected to hit US$3 billion by the end of this year, up 10% compared to last year.
