Cameroon government offers land for extra corn production
Cameroon's agriculture ministry is offering 6,000 hectares of land for corn production as part of government aims to boost food production, state-run Cameroon Radio Television reported Friday (August 21).
The drive to increase food production follows shortages and price hikes which sparked nationwide protests in February 2008, leading to at least 40 deaths.
The land, in the northeastern state of Adamawa, will be offered to GIC Kawtal Semrie and Dreamland in a partnership agreement that they will signed with agriculture ministry.
"Commitment to see about raising corn production by 40,000 tonnes in three months is part of efforts by the government to see about food sufficiency and fight against poverty," the radio said.
Officially, Cameroon's yearly corn output stands at 1.38 million tonnes, and annual demand could reach 1.5 million by the end of this year.
