Price summary

Prices of Philippine feed grains remain on the uptrend over the week amid the strong cyclone that devastated north Luzon.

Typhoon Labuyo (international name Utor) was one of the strongest cyclones that hit the country this year, wrecking the provinces in northern Luzon which are among the biggest producers of corn and livestock.
Except for feed wheat, almost all feed grain prices went up over the week and are foreseen to continue in the coming days, particularly corn, due to the expected requirement surge for meat for the fourth quarter demand for the Christmas holidays

Market Analysis

Meanwhile, corn farmers assured that Labuyo will not have a significant impact on the third quarter corn output this year.

The Philippine Maize Federation (PhilMaize) said around 15% of corn-growing areas were only damaged in the typhoon-affected areas and that most cornlands can still be harvested.

Corn farmers in Region II were the worst hit, reporting losses of about PHP315.61 million (US$13.99 million) of corn harvests.

However PhilMaize chairman Roger Navarro says the losses can slightly increase the price of corn in the coming weeks.

Government figures show that corn production this year is seen at 7.37 million tonnes, 0.4% lower than the 7.4 million tonnes produced in 2012.
