Chicken the most popular meat for the first time in Iceland
For the very first time since its founding history, Icelanders have purchased more poultry than lamb and mutton.
From August 2006 to July 2007, Icelanders bought 7,198 tonnes of poultry, 37 tonnes more than lamb and mutton.
Sheep has traditionally been the main meat source for the country.
Head of the Association of Sheep Farmers, Johannes Sigfusson, said he is not surprised chicken has overtaken mutton as Iceland has always had an abnormally high consumption of mutton.
