Meat production up in Cyprus
The number of animals slaughtered in May recorded an increase for almost all kinds of animals except sheep and goats when compared with the previous month, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
Poultry slaughter for the month of May was up 35.8 percent on-year while pig slaughter was up 9.2 percent. Cattle slaughter however, was down 9.1 percent.
June's milk production was 11,450 tonnes, a 1.7-percent increase over the previous year.
While poultry slaughter was up, hatching of eggs was down sharply compared to the previous year.
Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the eggs placed in incubation for laying in June fell 26.4 percent, and also the eggs for meat fell 20 percent.
The chicks used for laying increased to 65,070 compared to 63,000 in May, whereas the chicks used for meat decreased to 1.30 million from 1.34 million in the previous month.
