German 2008 wheat crop seen up 17.5 percent on-year

German farmers' association DBV expects the wheat crop in 2008 to rise 17.5 percent on-year to 24.3 million tonnes, while the harvest for all types of grains increased 16 percent to 47 million tonnes, the association said Thursday (August 21).

"The German farmers had a good, but not a record rapeseed and cereals harvest. After the bad results last year we're returning to normality," the association's general secretary, Helmut Born, said.

The association attributes the harvest increase to the expansion of cultivated area and the increased use of fertilizers in Germany
