Oil spill on Vietnamese river threatens aquaculture

An oil spill on the Can Giuoc River in the southern province of Long An, southern Vietnam, threatens 440 hectares of aquaculture in the Phuoc Vinh Tay and Phuoc Vinh Dong communes.

About 9,000 litres of fuel oil spilled into the river last week when a pipe broke as the fuel was being pumped from a barge into tanks used by the Tan Van Phuoc Co Ltd in Phu Thanh hamlet at the Long Phung Commune.

The accident happened late last Sunday (Aug 16), but relevant authorities have not taken any effective steps to deal with the situation as of Thursday.
