China steps up on chicken meat imports
China imported nearly 420,000 tonnes of poultry meat in the first half of 2008, up 25,000 tonnes on-year, according to custom authorities in Beijing.
China imported most of the chicken from the US, which supplied 300,000 tonnes during the period, up 50,000 tonnes on-year. China also imported 112,600 tonnes of chicken meat from Argentina, a dramatic increase from the previous figure of 18,700 tonnes.
Over 50 percent of poultry imports in the first half of 2008 were in the form of chicken feet.
