Vietnam province opens shrimp processing plant
Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on Tuesday (Aug 18) broke the ground for the construction of a plant capable of processing 20,000 tonnes of shrimp a year in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang.
According to local reports, Minh Phu Factory, described as one of the three biggest facilities of its kind in the world, is expected to employ 10,000 local workers and can make an annual turnover of US$180 million.
Hai said the government attached importance to the construction of large-scale and labour-intensive processing factories in the Mekong Delta like Minh Phu.
He said developing processing facilities that use local farm and aqua material is the major orientation in the region's economic development.
Minh Phu managers said the company would become the country's biggest shrimp producer and processor in the years to come.
