Vietnam to apply new tracking system for seafood products

Vietnam's Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development (MARD) said on Wednesday (Aug 19) that the country will apply a system of tracking seafood products raised by local farmers.

MARD said the move is to ensure stability of the country's seafood export markets as foreign importers are raising standards for Vietnam's seafood products, also to help bring more benefits to local seafood raisers.

Once the system is installed, all kinds of seafood products bred by farmers in Mekong Delta provinces, the country's seafood granary, can be traced back with all information relating to the products, said Nguyen Nhu Tiep, head of the department of agro- forestry-fishery quality management under the ministry.

Tiep said the information includes the amount of antibiotic and chemical substances, sizes, types and colors of products, and diseases.

According to media reports, the implementation of the system is included in a project under the cooperation between the ministry and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).
