Japan's Nippon Suisan to triple production of bluefin tuna

Nippon Suisan Kaisha Ltd, one of Japan's largest seafood companies, plans to spend 300 million yen (US$2.72 million) by year end to triple production of farm-raised bluefin tuna.

The operation would be spearheaded by group member Nakatani Suisan Co, which raises tuna at three fish farms in Japan.

To boost production, three more large fish cages will be added to the farm in Kagoshima Prefecture, bringing the total to 18 cages.

The company closed its processing plant in Chile June, citing a total of US$10 million lost since the plant's opening in 2007.

The company also announced last October it would be investing a total of US$10.2 million in three Japanese plants and a Taiwanese plant last October.
