China's pork prices continue to surge

The price of pork in China has risen for the 10th straight week to hit RMB17.09 (US$2.52) per kilogramme as of August 15, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

The uptrend in pork prices was due to an outbreak of a disease in pigs, the rise in breeding costs, government policies and the impact of the flood in some regions, analysts said.

The prices of 57 types of major edible agricultural products in July increased 7% on-year.

Of the total, the average prices of 18 types of vegetables and eggs jumped 49.7% and 9.3% on-year, respectively.

The rise in vegetable prices resulted from the weather conditions and demand and supply changes in the market, the ministry said.
