*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine.

Market analysis

Demand for poultry feed continued to remain slack while prices of eggs and broilers stayed low. With feed sales slow and supplies of methionine poised to increase as one local producer has completed its new facilities, feed producers held back purchases of the amino acid. Prices dipped considerably as a result.

Nevertheless, liquid methionine prices remained firm as there was news that Addiseo had halted its operation in Nanjing due to problems in production facilities.

In Europe, spot prices of methionine remained in the range of EUR3.64-3.69/kg while large volume orders slid to EUR3.57-3.63/kg.

Market forecast

Even as Addiseo continues to halt operation in its Nanjing plant, supplies of methionine are expected to stay ample with a local producer set to step up production. Hence, prices of methionine are unlikely to surge tremendously.

Nonetheless, the demand for methionine will increase as poultry feed consumption grows amid stronger sales of eggs and broilers with Mid-Autumn Festival approaching. This will lend support to the methionine market, lifting prices moderately should demand see sufficient gains.
