German meat output progresses in H1

Germany's slaughtered meat production reached about four million tonnes in the first half of 2011, increasing by 1.1% as compared to the previous year, according to the statistics bureau Destatis on Monday (Aug 15).

The growth rate is considerably smaller than in previous years, as meat production has grown by 4% on average every year since 2005.

In the first six months of this year, the number of slaughtered pigs grew only slightly, while the number of slaughtered cattle declined in annual terms.

The majority of produced meat during the first half of 2011 was pork whereby 2.7 million tonnes of meat were produced from 28.8 million slaughtered pigs. The 1.8 million slaughtered cattle yielded 561,000 tonnes of meat in the first six months of this year.
