Pakistan poultry group to sell chicken, eggs on reduced rates

The Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) will offer concessional rates for chicken and eggs at its stalls in Ramazan Bazaars.

Five rupees (US$0.06) per kg concession will be offered in chicken price while Rs 2 in per dozen eggs, according to PPA secretary Major Javed Bukhari.

He said that high rates of chicken in the country were mainly due to shortage of chicks as most of the companies producing grand-parents and parent flocks of chicks have left business due to consistent loss.

Bukhari said there are six companies in chicks' grand-parents flocks business but at present only two are in the field while 150 companies were in chicks parent flocks business out of them only 50 are there at present.

He added that these companies faced huge losses due to low price of chicks in the country and left the business resulting in rise in the price of chicks. About 40 percent poultry farms in the country have been closed due to loss in the business, he said.

After the increase in price of chicks and chicken, Bukhari said investors have again expressed interest towards the business and reduced prices were expected with the passage of time.

He said that 83 percent increase has been witnessed in price of poultry feed during last one year which is also important reason behind the increase in poultry price.

He said that growth of poultry birds in hot and humid weather was quite difficult in the ordinary sheds.

The birds' growth in controlled poultry sheds is better but it needs power and due to load shedding power generators have to be used which are operated by using diesel which is expensive.
