The gut health meeting - Battle of the intestine

Alltech, the global animal health company, hosted a successful gut health meeting focusing on the "Battle of the Intestine" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 5, 2005. A dynamic group of 57 industry experts spoke of the upcoming ban on Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGPs) and the consequences it would have on the future of animal welfare. The European Union (EU) would implement the AGP ban on December 31, 2005. In the future, it was also expected that similar bans would be implemented outside of the EU.

Renowned speakers at the event included:

    • Mr. Aziz Sacranie, Alltech Asia - Pacific, whose presentation was titled, "The EU antibiotic growth promoter ban: How will they cope without AGPs"

    • Dr. Richard Chong, General Manager of Alltech-Malaysia, presented on the area of "Multiple antibiotic resistance and what is the cure? "

    • Dr. Fernando Rutz, Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil, presented a case study on the "Current issues in the Brazilian poultry industry: Alternatives to AGPs"

They examined the effects the AGP ban would have on companies and looked at cures for Multiple Antibiotic Resistance. During Dr. Chong's presentation, he commented on how antibiotic resistance had spread from farm animals to food supplies, affecting human resistance to antibiotics. The speakers suggested natural alternatives such as Bio-Mos® that was available to the industry and would maintain animal welfare. Bio-Mos® was derived from the yeast cell wall of a specific strain of yeast. It had 12 years of research and over 300 trials from universities and research institutes.

For 25 years, Alltech has been researching and developing natural and strategic feeding solutions for the animal feed industry around the world. One of Alltech's particular strengths was its collaborative approach to working with its customers. The ability to put resources directly at the disposal of a partner feed company differentiated Alltech in the marketplace. This year would indeed be a year of change in the future of growth promotion.
